"There is no misunderstanding, your daughter is a liar!"
"It's not her fault. She comes from a long line of liars. I'm a politician, my father was a politician..."I'm always a sucker for a Deanna Durbin film where she gets to play a headstrong and opinionated character, so the Universal musical Can't Help Singing is therefore a nice treat. Jerome Kern's music is pretty, the color cinematography by Woody Bredell and W. Howard Greene and costumes by Walter Plunkett are beautiful, and above all, I enjoyed Durbin as a lovely young lady - a senator's (Ray Collins) daughter who likes to make up details about herself when the situation calls for it - who travels west circa the Gold…

Dazzling Deanna in glorious, shimmering Technicolor?! We mere mortals are too blessed!

Golden blonde Deanna Durbin in color?!? OKKKAAAYYYY
Deanna is charming as ever, and I'm so happy this film was made in color. Every single dress is STUNNING, I need her color coordinated closet!
I can't explain why (except that Deanna is an earthbound angel) but Deanna films warm me up inside right to my very soul. I feel so happy every time I get to watch a new one. Then, later, I can't get the ones I've seen already off of my mind.
Deanna's lilac gown while she sang "More and More" was the cherry on top of my love for this film. That scene...is there anything more romantic than that?!?!? And what an ending, a pink fountain suddenly fades into a sparkling Deanna!

Takes a while to gain traction, but this is a lovely film ... if you have a soft spot for Deanna Durbin.
There are grand landscape scenes in this, too; of many covered wagons moving westward (this is set during the 1850s). The ending is a delight (and rather comical in a way that Deanna makes things more comical than might otherwise be).
Robert Paige contributes much to this, too. Him and Deanna have some chemistry in this and 'the pretender' (David Bruce) that Deanna initially likes plays being a pretender well. Akim Tamiroff (as Prince Gregory Stroganovsky) and Leonid Kinskey play a nice comic duo who get mixed into Deanna's doings. Plus there's music and Deanna singing:)
No, it's…

Got to be one of my least favorite Deanna Durbin films. The dolled up western surroundings and a curly blond haired Durbin singing and singing, keeping the mood sugary sweet, got on my nerves. Got to make 'em more rugged than this if you're going out in rough country. Even if it's a Durbin movie.

Can’t Help Singing is a charming classic film in gorgeous Technicolor and wonderful costumes and dresses that transport you to that time period. The songs are just lovely. I loved hearing Deanna Durbin’s vocals in a lot of the songs that are to be found here. Her voice was stunning and beautiful! I loved hearing her sing! I had also loved and adored her character in this movie. For Caroline her parents do not approve of the man she loved and sent him away. Little did they expect that their daughter looked for him. Her character was strong willed and went after what she wanted and what she loved. Even was able to hold her own amongst those that were…

This Deanna Durbin is not even close to the other two I've watched. It was OK for one viewing (depending on your tolerance for musicals or westerns), but not great. At only an hour and a half, it seems long.
When gold is discovered in California, Durbin's scummy lieutenant boyfriend is sent out west. She runs away to be with him, but his company is always one move ahead of her. Finally she meets bumbling Akim Tamiroff and Leonid Kinskey who keep trying to run off with her trunk, and Robert Paige who is a card sharp running from the law. Filmed in Technicolor, the film looks beautiful. There are some amusing bits, but it never really comes together.

Deanna Durbin was the OG Disney princess archetype. Singing in the forest, looking flawless even after days of traveling with the wagon train, dancing past wild deers and shit. The BLUEPRINT.

I found this slow and not very interesting for the most part. I did like the costumes and the singing though.

OK I get it Deanna Durbin can sing and she is adorable. But this movie is not very interesting. I was quite bored with this one.

David Bruce once again looks really hot
Idk how I missed this lavish technicolor musical. I’m obsessed with this period of color musical especially when they look amazing but everything about the characters and story is super stock. This has a lot of inuendo though and funny robbers. Hmmm I can’t remember anything else
